In Clearfield, Utah, frenectomy is performed right here in our dental office with the WaterLase® dental laser. A frenectomy is the removal of a frenulum, which is a small fold of tissue. There are two main types of frenectomy:
- Lingual frenectomy, which is the removal of the frenulum under the tongue. Lingual frenectomy may be necessary if you are affected by ankyloglossia (also known as tongue-tie); this condition is caused by an unusually short, thick frenulum that does not allow the tongue to move as freely as needed.
- Labial frenectomy, which is the removal of the frenulum that attaches to the center of the upper lip and between the upper two front teeth. The labial frenulum may cause a large gap between the front teeth, as well as recession of the gum tissue by pulling the gums off the bone. Labial frenectomy can prevent gum recession and assist in closing the front tooth gap. Patients with dentures may also benefit from a labial frenectomy as the labial frenulum may pull and loosen the dentures.
